Relentless phone calls interrupt the peace of a warm August morning in Three Pines. Though the tiny Québec village is impossible to find on any map, someone has managed to track down Armand Gamache, head of homicide at the Sûreté, as he sits with his wife in their back garden. Reine-Marie watches with increasing unease as her husband refuses to pick up, though he clearly knows who is on the other end. When he finally answers, his rage shatters the calm of their quiet Sunday morning.

La victime est un archéologue amateur connu pour sa quête obsessive de la sépulture de Champlain.

L’été s’achève et la nature réserve aux habitants de Three Pines un dernier éclat… terrifiant. Un mort est découvert dans l’endroit le plus vivant du village: le bistro d’Olivier. De prime abord, personne n’admet connaître le vieil ermite assassiné. Armand Gamache et son équipe devront sonder les strates de mensonges et de non-dits que dissimule le vernis idyllique des lieux. Des sentiers oubliés les conduisent au fond des bois, là où se cachent des secrets et des trésors honteux.

À Three Pines, durant le week-end de Pâques, tout le monde rajeunit le temps d’une grande chasse aux œufs. Lorsqu’une étrangère qui communique avec les esprits s’arrête au village, les habitants n’y voient encore qu’une occasion de se divertir. Une séance de spiritisme est organisée dans la vieille maison abandonnée des Hadley. L’exercice destiné à libérer la demeure du mal qu’elle recèle est tragiquement interrompu par la mort d’une participante. Morte de peur, vraiment? C’est ce qu’Armand Gamache va devoir découvrir avec son équipe.

Enveloppé de neige, le village de Three Pines se berce d’une atmosphère du temps des Fêtes jusqu’à ce qu’un cri brise cette harmonie. Une spectatrice de la traditionnelle partie de curling a été électrocutée sous les yeux de tous, au beau milieu d’un lac gelé. L’inspecteur-chef Armand Gamache revient dans la charmante communauté. Avec minutie, il dévoile le passé de la victime et découvre un écheveau de secrets et de rivalités. Et Gamache a ses propres ennemis au sein de la Sûreté du Québec.

Three Pines, dans les Cantons-de-l’Est, est un petit coin de paradis. Durant le week-end de l’Action de grâce, Jane Neal est trouvée morte dans les bois, le cœur transpercé. Ce qui pourrait n’être qu’un bête accident de chasse laisse perplexe Armand Gamache, l’inspecteur-chef de la Sûreté du Québec. Qui pourrait bien souhaiter la mort de cette enseignante à la retraite, artiste à ses heures, qui a vu grandir tous les enfants du village? En détective expérimenté, Armand Gamache se doute qu’un serpent se cache au cœur de l’éden.

Quand il se réalise, le rêve d’une vie peut virer au cauchemar. Lors du vernissage de sa première exposition au Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal, un mauvais pressentiment hante Clara Morrow. De fait, le lendemain de la fête à Three Pines, une femme est trouvée la nuque brisée au milieu de son jardin. Qui était cette invitée que personne ne reconnaît? Peu à peu, le tableau du crime se dessine et l’inspecteur-chef Armand Gamache apprend que, dans le monde de l’art, chaque sourire dissimule une moquerie, chaque gentillesse cache un cœur en pièces.

Au creux d’une forêt sauvage du Québec, les moines de Saint-Gilbert-entre-les-Loups vivent cloîtrés et en silence depuis des siècles. La communauté oubliée est redevenue célèbre à cause de ses chants grégoriens, dont l’effet est si puissant qu’on le nomme «le beau mystère». In the middle of the turmoil a father approaches Gamache, pleading for help in finding his daughter. As crisis piles upon crisis, Gamache tries to hold off the encroaching chaos, and realizes the search for Vivienne Godin should be abandoned. But with a daughter of his own, he finds himself developing a profound, and perhaps unwise, empathy for her distraught father.

Christmas is approaching, and in Québec it's a time of dazzling snowfalls, bright lights, and gatherings with friends in front of blazing hearths. But shadows are falling on the usually festive season for Chief Inspector Armand Gamache. Most of his best agents have left the Homicide Department, his old friend and lieutenant Jean-Guy Beauvoir hasn't spoken to him in months, and hostile forces are lining up against him. When Gamache receives a message from Myrna Landers that a longtime friend has failed to arrive for Christmas in the village of Three Pines, he welcomes the chance to get away.

When a peculiar letter arrives inviting Armand Gamache to an abandoned farmhouse, the former head of the Sûreté du Québec discovers that a complete stranger has named him one of the executors of her will. Still on suspension, and frankly curious, Gamache accepts and soon learns that the other two executors are Myrna Landers, the bookseller from Three Pines, and a young builder. None of them had ever met the elderly woman. The will is so odd and includes bequests that are so wildly unlikely that Gamache and the others suspect the woman must have been delusional.

No outsiders are ever admitted to the monastery of Saint-Gilbert-Entre-les-Loups, hidden deep in the wilderness of Quebec, where two dozen cloistered monks live in peace and prayer. They grow vegetables, they tend chickens, they make chocolate. And they sing. Ironically, for a community that has taken a vow of silence, the monks have become world-famous for their glorious voices, raised in ancient chants whose effect on both singer and listener is so profound it is known as “the beautiful mystery.”

While the residents of the Québec village of Three Pines take advantage of the deep snow to ski and toboggan, to drink hot chocolate in the bistro and share meals together, the Chief Inspector finds his holiday with his family interrupted by a simple request. He’s asked to provide security for what promises to be a non-event. A visiting Professor of Statistics will be giving a lecture at the nearby university.

When an intricate old map is found stuffed into the walls of the bistro in Three Pines, it at first seems no more than a curiosity. But the closer the villagers look, the stranger it becomes. Given to Armand Gamache as a gift the first day of his new job, the map eventually leads him to shattering secrets. To an old friend and older adversary. It leads the former Chief of Homicide for the Sûreté du Québec to places even he is afraid to go. But must. And there he finds four young cadets in the Sûreté academy, and a dead professor. And, with the body, a copy of the old, odd map.

When Chief Inspector Gamache arrives in picturesque Three Pines, he steps into a village in chaos. A man has been found bludgeoned to death, and there is no sign of a weapon, a motive or even the dead man's name. As Gamache and his colleagues start to dig under the skin of this peaceful haven for clues, they uncover a trail of stolen treasure, mysterious codes and a shameful history that begins to shed light on the victim's identity - and points to a terrifying killer...
