Im Verlauf der "fiktionalen Vorlesung" ändert das Werk plötzlich seine Richtung und offenbart in Form einer veränderten Stilistik die unterschiedlichen Interpretationsmöglichkeiten von redaktionell aufgearbeiteten Tatsachen, deren Inhalte nur zu leicht an entsprechendes Publikum ausgerichtet und angepasst werden können.

Unmittelbar nachdem er sich von einer gut 15 Jahre währenden Opiumsucht befreit hatte, verfasste der britische Schriftsteller und Journalist Thomas De Quincey seine Bekenntnisse eines englischen Opiumessers. Der Text wurde erstmals unter dem Titel Confessions of an English Opium-Eater im September und Oktober 1821 im London Magazine anonym veröffentlicht. 1822 folgte die Veröffentlichung als gedrucktes Buch und 1856 eine durch den Verfasser selbst redigierte weitere Ausgabe. Mit der Veröffentlichung seiner "Bekenntnisse" erregte Thomas De Quincey großes Aufsehen.

Confessions of an English Opium-Eater by Thomas De Quincey (1785-1859) was first published anonymously in 1821 in the London Magazine and was published in book form a year later. A revised edition was published in 1846. It is an account by the author of his addiction to laudanum and the effects it had on his life. This recording presents an abridged version of the 1856 edition.
