Histoire
Once every year, Scoutmaster Tim Riggs leads a troop of boys into the Canadian wilderness for a weekend camping trip - a tradition as comforting and reliable as a good ghost story around a roaring bonfre. The boys are a tight-knit crew. There’s Kent, one of the most popular kids in school; Ephraim and Max, also well-liked and easygoing; then there’s Newt the nerd and Shelley the odd duck. For the most part, they all get along and are happy to be there - which makes Scoutmaster Tim’s job a little easier.

These people will give anything for the idols they worship, be they rock stars, actors or authors. Or even serial killers. Lori is just such a fanatic. Her obsession is with Edmund Cox, a man of sadistic cruelty who butchered more than 20 women. She’s gone so far as to forge a relationship with him, visiting him in prison and sending him letters on a regular basis. She will do anything to get close to him, so when he gives her a task, she eagerly accepts it. She has no idea of the horror that awaits her.

Long ago, Nathan lived in a house in the country with his abusive father—and has never told his family what happened there. Long ago, Maddie was a little girl making dolls in her bedroom when she saw something she shouldn’t have—and is trying to remember that lost trauma by making haunting sculptures. Long ago, something sinister walked in the mountains and the coal mines of their hometown in rural Pennsylvania. Now, Nate and Maddie Graves are married, and they have moved back to their hometown with their son, Oliver. And now what happened long ago is happening again...to Oliver.

Histoire
A strange plague called the "Gets" is decimating humanity on a global scale. It causes people to forget - small things at first, like where they left their keys... then the not-so-small things like how to drive, or the letters of the alphabet. Then their bodies forget how to function involuntarily - and there is no cure. But now, far below the surface of the Pacific Ocean, deep in the Marianas Trench, an heretofore unknown substance hailed as "ambrosia" has been discovered - a universal healer, from initial reports.

From electrifying horror author Nick Cutter comes a haunting new novel, reminiscent of Cormac McCarthy's Blood Meridian and Stephen King's It, in which a trio of mismatched mercenaries is hired by a young woman for a deceptively simple task: check in on her nephew, who may have been taken against his will to a remote New Mexico backwoods settlement called Little Heaven. Shortly after they arrive, things begin to turn ominous.

Deep in the heart of Appalachia stands a crooked farmhouse miles from any road. The Morrows keep to themselves, and it's served them well so far. When girls go missing off the side of the highway, the cops don't knock on their door. Which is a good thing, seeing what's buried in the Morrows' backyard. But 19-year-old Michael Morrow isn't like the rest of his family. He doesn't take pleasure in the screams that echo through the trees.

Gage Chandler is descended from kings. That’s what his mother always told him. Years later, he is a true crime writer, with one grisly success—and a movie adaptation—to his name, along with a series of subsequent less notable efforts. But now he is being offered the chance for the big break: to move into the house where a pair of briefly notorious murders occurred, apparently the work of disaffected teens during the Satanic Panic of the 1980s.

When he and his wife search New England for the perfect nineteenth-century home, they find no township more charming, no countryside more idyllic than the farming village of Cornwall Coombe. Here they begin a new life: simple, pure, close to nature - and ultimately more terrifying than Manhattan’s darkest alley.

When the Imagine Network commissioned a documentary on mermaids, to be filmed from the cruise ship Atargatis, they expected what they had always received before: an assortment of eyewitness reports that proved nothing, some footage that proved even less, and the kind of ratings that only came from peddling imaginary creatures to the masses.

Description
The Ruins follows two American couples enjoying a pleasant, lazy beach holiday together in Mexico. On an impulse, they go off with newfound friends in search of one of their group, the young German who, in pursuit of a girl, has headed for the remote Mayan ruins, site of a fabled archeological dig.
This is what happens from the moment the searchers, moving into the wild interior, begin to suspect that there is an insidious, horrific "other" among them.

A worthy matured successor to Lord of the Flies
The complexity sneaks up on you in such a way that when the classic horror truly begins, it is overshadowed by the horror of the human mind. In any other scenario, the classic horror elements would be terrifying enough, and even more so than the typical horror story if you focus on those elements on their own. But the fear comes from the deep dive we take into the minds of the protagonists. Most simply, this is Art.

Don’t let the film deceive you
This book was incredible. Tense, nail-biting, and included body horror (for those that are squeamish).
The film adaptation threw me off completely and it just goes to show that the book is usually much better.

Survival Horror, a perfect vacation book
I am filing this book under, "good vacation reads", it's not too heavy, or too wordy, just a nice light and compelling story that any seasoned horror/occult fan would enjoy.
Spoilers:
The story invites us to join a group of identifiable characters who are enjoying a typical tropical vacation. Then they make the very poor decision to embark on a journey to visit ancient ruins. One of them is wearing flimsy sandals, another has two bottles of tequila and a hangover...
The author details the groups decline in morale along with psychological and physical degradation in terrifying detail.
After the book was done I lay awake for a few nights thinking of what I would do in such a situation... would I be the hero? The final girl? What would I do to survive?Part of me still wants to know what lay beyond the dark, cold chambers beneath the temple. What exactly was the driving force behind those evil vines?
PS - I also saw the movie and that alternate ending keeps me wondering.. what would happen if the vines escaped?!

Grossed out—in a good way!
This book gave me the heebie-jeebies on more than one occasion. I enjoyed listening to how things slowly began to fall apart, trust started to break, and madness slowly started to set in. There were several times in which I said, “oh snap!” at what the characters said and did. I thought it was pretty realistic how not everyone was instantly good at the whole “survival” aspect. And while some complained about the lack of actual “chapters”, I actually enjoyed it! It gave a sense of urgency, and I could feel the tension building as time went on.
The only things I had issues with were the poorly written female characters—quite flat and one-dimensional. Granted—I’d probably be a crying hot mess, too. And there were several instances where things got a bit repetitive, and probably could have been cut down.
Overall, a great book! I’d recommend!

Unique Story, Well Told
Love the way this story unfolds. If you were to summarize the story to a friend, it would sound pretty implausible, maybe even absurd. But the author tells it in such a way that it's easy to suspend disbelief, and the characters are developed in such a way that it's easy to invest yourself in their survival. Excellent, albeit unconventional, horror/suspense/survival story. Narration was great, too.

Great story but…
Though the story is great and I liked listening to the narrator, they really should have thought about the cutoff points for the chapters. I know that the physical book doesn’t have any chapters, but it does have spaces where they could of cut off rather than cutting in the middle of a sentence. It interrupts the story if you are only listening from ‘chapter’ to ‘chapter’ and not the whole thing in one go. Other than that, I like the story better than the movie. It really dives deep into the psyche of each character in a survivor scenario.
