Even the smartest among us can feel inept as we fail to figure out which light switch or oven burner to turn on, or whether to push, pull, or slide a door. The fault, argues this ingenious - even liberating - audiobook, lies not in ourselves, but in product design that ignores the needs of users and the principles of cognitive psychology. The Design of Everyday Things shows that good, usable design is possible. The rules are simple: make things visible, exploit natural relationships that couple function and control, and make intelligent use of constraints.

They say you shouldn't ask your mom whether your business is a good idea, because she loves you and will lie to you. This is technically true, but it misses the point. You shouldn't ask anyone if your business is a good idea. It's a bad question, and everyone will lie to you at least a little. As a matter of fact, it's not their responsibility to tell you the truth. It's your responsibility to find it, and it's worth doing right.

Description
Note to Audible Listeners: As of December 2019, this version of the Hooked audiobook has been revised and rerecorded to greatly improve audio quality. Please disregard any reviews mentioning poor audio quality prior to December 2019.
Why do some products capture our attention, while others flop? What makes us engage with certain products out of habit? Is there a pattern underlying how technologies hook us? This audiobook introduces listeners to the "Hooked Model", a four-step process companies use to build customer habits. Through consecutive cycles through the hook, successful products reach their ultimate goal of bringing users back repeatedly - without depending on costly advertising or aggressive messaging.
Hooked is a guide to building products people use because they want to, not because they have to. Written for product managers, designers, marketers, startup founders, and people eager to learn more about the things that control our behaviors, this audiobook gives listeners:
- Practical insights to create user habits that stick.
- Actionable steps for building products people love.
- Behavioral techniques used by Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, and other habit-forming products.
- New for second edition! An additional case study for building health habits.
Nir Eyal distilled years of research, consulting, and practical experience to write a manual for creating habit-forming products. Nir has taught at the Stanford Graduate School of Business and Hasso Plattner Institute of Design. His writing on technology, psychology, and business appears in the Harvard Business Review, The Atlantic, TechCrunch, and Psychology Today. He is also the author of Indistractable: How to Control Your Attention and Choose Your Life.

Irony in the follow up book, yet pertinent
Oh, I really enjoyed this audiobook. It was simple, I came to the lean start up, and though the title is kind of evocative in a negative way given how many people are dependent on technology, it reinstates, and reiterates the opportunity to have a positive impact through the products that we create. I
especially appreciated some of the reiterations on necessities for antibodies to tech dependency and the morality section.

Love it!
Title: Hooked: Love it!
Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (5/5)
Hooked is an exceptional book that completely captivated me from start to finish.
It delves deep into the intricate world of human psychology and behavior, unraveling the secrets behind what makes certain products and experiences addictive.
One of the most impressive aspects of Hooked is its ability to seamlessly blend academic research with practical examples and case studies. The author presents a compelling framework, comprising of four stages - Trigger, Action, Variable Reward, and Investment - that sheds light on how successful products and services create habits within their users.
The writing style is engaging and easy to follow, making complex concepts accessible to readers of all backgrounds. The book doesn't shy away from diving into the ethical implications of designing addictive experiences, and it encourages readers to think critically about their own behavior as consumers.
What sets Hooked apart from other books on similar topics is its emphasis on creating positive habits and fostering long-term engagement. Rather than simply exploiting psychological vulnerabilities, the author advocates for building products that truly add value to users' lives. This approach resonated with me and left me feeling inspired to apply these principles in my own endeavors.
Furthermore, Hooked is relevant to professionals across various fields, from entrepreneurs and marketers to product designers and psychologists. The insights shared in this book have the potential to transform the way we approach product development and user engagement, providing a valuable resource for anyone seeking to create meaningful and impactful experiences.
In conclusion, Hooked is a must-read for anyone interested in understanding the psychology behind habit formation and creating products that stand the test of time. With its engaging writing style, practical examples, and thought-provoking content, this book has firmly secured its place on my list of favorites. Prepare to be enlightened and inspired by this remarkable exploration of human behavior and product design.

Solid but for a very specific audience
This had great info but it’s very narrowly applicable to people developing products that they want to get people hooked on. There’s a little on habit development and the psychology behind it but if you aren’t directly developing a product designed to get people hooked this book won’t offer much for you. (Not a criticism, just saying, the premise is narrow)
