Description

On an entirely normal, beautiful fall day in Chester's Mill, Maine, the town is inexplicably and suddenly sealed off from the rest of the world by an invisible force field. Planes crash into it and fall from the sky in flaming wreckage, a gardener's hand is severed as "the dome" comes down on it, people running errands in the neighboring town are divided from their families, and cars explode on impact. No one can fathom what this barrier is, where it came from, and when - or if - it will go away.

Dale Barbara, Iraq vet and now a short-order cook, finds himself teamed with a few intrepid citizens - town newspaper owner Julia Shumway, a physician's assistant at the hospital, a select-woman, and three brave kids. Against them stands Big Jim Rennie, a politician who will stop at nothing - even murder - to hold the reins of power, and his son, who is keeping a horrible secret in a dark pantry. But their main adversary is the Dome itself. Because time isn't just short. It's running out.

Great book recommend !

Well it’s me again the guy who has been reading every Stephen king book he can get his hands on, this book starts off a little slow but quickly catches your attention for the other 99% of the book there are a lot of characters and a lot of things happening in the book at the same time that affect everything in this “dome” where no one can get out and no one can get in! Who knows who could be under the dome when it appears! The performance of the reader of this book was another reason it was so enjoyable the reader is the KEY to a good story and this guy nailed it and made me hater and love character much more than I would by reading the paperback, hope you enjoy this book as much as I did -GW

Need another man to hate?

This was a terrific listen. Interesting parallels between the real world and the dome. Always love Stephen King stories. Much different from the series that played last year on tv

Took Some Time to Get Going; the Payoff Was Worth

Firstly, Raul Esparza does an amazing job narrating the book. He has a vocal variety that breathes life into a massive cast of characters and allows you to instantly recognize who is speaking. He's one of the better narrators I have heard.

The book itself was enjoyable, but I found it took me close to half way (something like 14 hours) to really get into. It does get more and more exciting as events get out of hand, and without revealing spoilers, for commend King on his attention to detail on the scientific side of what issues the dome would cause.

Great read

Very different from the short lived tv show! Much more engaging. I did not like the narration at first but eventually it grew on me.

Would recommend

The narrator had issues with a Maine accent. It sounded more southern than Yankee. Other than that, it is a good production.

Horrid narration, thin characters, poor plot

What would have made Under the Dome better?

I have been a fan of Audible for years, listened to many books of various genre's and while not all are as good as I hoped some are fantastic. This one however a huge disappointment and believe is a testament of the power of marketing and how that trumps quality.

I am not usually so critical of another person's work, especially one which is this large, i can't imaging how long it took to narrate a book of this size, but this is possibly the worst narration I've ever encountered. Esparza's voice is fine, his enunciation is clear, but the direction of the characters, their voices and manner is amateurish. It might even warrant a do-over.

For example, the character, Big Jim, sounds like a slow, backwater country hick. The character is a New England used car salesman and local politician, and the character as it is read is non-believable. Many other characters are also cursed with voices that are very uncharacteristic and it's very hard to get past. The children's voices are whiny and nasally and all of them sound the same regardless of age or gender.

Ultimately, it may be best to watch the TV series, though I can't say if it would be any better. The story is pretty much a one plot act that goes on far too long and should have been a short story instead of a huge novel packed with uninteresting characters, most of who you could care less about or even differentiate from each other.

Sorry to be so critical, but this is like a long drawn out 10 course meal that isn't very good and takes too long to get the check and hit the road.

What could Stephen King have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

I am a fan of Stephen King's stories, characters and adventures for many years, and i have to say I don't believe he wrote this book. There are none of his characteristic techniques, conversations and the tone of the book seems very superficial. The Tommyknockers is similarly dark, though it involves fewer characters, they come alive and you get to know them. In this book, I can't say you know any of them beyond 1 or two character traits or perhaps a previous employer or spouse/partner. There is a great deal of dialog in this story and that can be a challenge, but much of the dialog is flat and uninteresting and really doesn't lead anywhere.

All the while when I was listening, I kept saying to myself that this doesn't sound or feel like a book by Stephen King. Too many of the references to drugs, TV shows, rock and roll bands, t-shirts and sex just don't fit into his repertoire of established styles.

I just finished 11/22/63 and though it wasn't my favorite, the narration, the characters in the story were vivid and full of detail and it brought the story to life. Dome had none of those things. I hate to say it, but this felt like a Dean Koontz novel I read long ago; the only one I read too.

How could the performance have been better?

Very simply there could have been a director and producer who worked with the narrator to establish the voices of each character in advance of beginning the recording. This seemed like an amateurish attempt to record a long story as fast as you could.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

Not really. During the last 8 hours of the recording I turned the narration speed to to x2 so i could get to the end. I really wish it was better

I expected more

What would have made Under the Dome better?

The story was much like the Stand- just under the dome. Divide up the good and the bad- throw in end of the world woes with a looming catastrophic event.... yawn

Has Under the Dome turned you off from other books in this genre?

From this author yes- he seems to revel in the gore and hideous details and should redirect that energy to plot and intrigue.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

I felt like it was rubber stamp Stephen king I really hoped for more.

Reader needs a new job

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

Story was good but the reader was terrible!

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Raul Esparza?

The reader put no inflection in his voice and read very fast, as though he has ADHD. Not a very good listen.

Narrators voice made me return the book

What disappointed you about Under the Dome?

I could only listen to about 5 minutes of Raul Esparza's narration before I had to turn it off. I have recently listened to King's The Stand and 11/22/63 and thoroughly enjoyed both story and narration of each but I don't think I could listen to 40+ hours of this. It's the paperback for me it seems.

What could Stephen King have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

Use the narrator from The Stand

How could the performance have been better?

better narration

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

extremely disappointed because I was intrigued by the premise of the book

Glad that's over!

This book was much, much longer than necessary and the ending was lame. The bad guys are so evil yet die so easily and don't suffer much. It is frustrating to read and goes on forever and by the time I was half done, I just wanted to quit. I can see this being a movie and feels like it was written for that purpose with an ending that will be easy to pull off on film.
I recommend you don't put yourself through the excruciatingly unentertaining hours.

Couldn't Finish It

I have read a few of King's book and have enjoyed them but this one was so bad I could not finish it. I got through part 2 of 5 and turned it off. The characters seemed to be trite, predictable, and extreme. The language used was profane to an extreme to me. This does not usually offend me when used in the correct context but it seemed to excessive.

disapointed

I had heard that this was the best book King had written in years. Maybe it is but still far below the standard set by "The Dead Zone", "The Shinning" and "Salems Lot", among others.
The predictable plot, B movie dialog and the one dimentional characters all contribute to a eye rolling experience. The terrible narration (just how many accents does Renney have?) didn't help either.

Less than half way done. I want more DOME story and less SMALL TOWN CHEMISTRY story! I just don't care enough about these people. (so far?)

Could not finish it

Decided not to waste any more time on an awful book at about 1 hr into segment 3. This is only the 2nd audio book in about 10 years of being a steady listener that I did not finish.

Very disappointing

I've always been a Stephen King fan so was looking forward to this bloated new release (1000+ pages? Please!). I almost gave up on it several times, but perservered even though I actively disliked most of it. It was neither suspenseful, nor scary.
The blood and gore were so prevelant, and graphic that this verged on sadistic pornography. The villains were one-dimensional, and the plot depended on the "good guys" acting conveniently stupid.
