Excellent book.

I listened to this book several times. There is a lot of good information in here. The topic is a little narrow, but the author does a good job at keeping it interesting. The narration is really good as well.

The only complaint I have is that at times, it seems the author was stretching a bit to find examples of industries in which the subscription model will work. I think he's correct for the most part, but a few of the examples were a bit of a reach. I wouldn't let that hold you back from purchasing the book. It's still really good.

Can be applied to almost any business

The author tells the story of many businesses that use the subscription model as opposed to the fee for performance model.

I recently sold a small CPA practice I started in which I switched to a subscription model (from the traditional time & billing model) about a year before it sold.

The difference is night and day, and had I ready this book back then, it would have been an even more productive switch.

This is a 5-star review for both the subscription model in general and the book itself. A must read for anyone who is or wants to be an entrepreneur.

Good story, bad reader

Please audible do not use this reader anymore. The book content itself was very good. Unfortunately it was painful to follow because of how boring the reader was. It felt like I was in a high school lecture with the worst speaker ever!!

An inspiring and informative read

Very useful if you're thinking of -- or already have a subscription business. I had to stop listening on multiple occasions to take notes!

Very practical, very How To

Where does The Automatic Customer rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Rarely do I see a book that is so practical. Most business strategy books are just common sense noise and sophisticated expressions. This one is a very actionable plan that you can start implementing the day you read the book.

Needed to hear this

As an entrepreneur who has a subscription element to the business, having it presented in such a manner made so much sense and has allowed us to change our trajectory going forward. Just picked up Built to Sell to listen to next.

Does not live up to its Sub-Title

The Subtitle leads you to believe that you will be given instructions on how to create a subscription business in any industry, but fails to deliver on this promise. The book discusses a lot successful subscription model services (Adobe, Netflix, Amazon, Dollar Shave Club), but the information you need to apply to your own business is simply not there. There are some cases where you hear something that you can extract and ask yourself if it will work for your business, but overall there is just not much applicable information here. If you've listened / read any other books about successful subscription models, then its doubtful you will find anything new or exciting here. If you are brand new to the topic matter, then this book is similar to others I've read about this topic.

Spectacular!

I was expecting the book to be interesting but this way exceeded my expectations. I was expecting mostly just hype "you need to run your business in a subscription model". But most of the last half of the book is all the nitty-gritty numbers and vocabulary you need to know to help you build a subscription model that will actually succeed. Once you get to that part make sure you have a pen and paper ready. You're going to need it. I find myself recommending this book to everyone now.

The voice talent was also very easy to listen to. sometimes the book can be great but the voice is just horrible. Not so with this one.

A must for any entrepreneur

I can't get enough of this book, I'm now ordering it in print so I can reread, highlight, make notes and study my little heart out. Subscription business models make my heart so a beat and this book has catapulted to the top of my faves list. Thank you John for writing it, and Don for reading it to me!

Couldn’t listen to narrator

I can’t comment on the content as I could not listen to this book due to the narration. What I did listen to, it seemed like the narrator didn’t know the material he was reading, emphasizing the wrong spots. I’m buying the book and will read.
