Description

The coauthor of the phenomenal New York Times best-selling classic The One Minute Manager explores the skills needed to become an effective self-leader in this essential work, now updated throughout.

Just as Ken Blanchard's phenomenal best-selling classic The One Minute Manager gives leaders the three secrets to managing others, this follow-up book gives people the three secrets to managing themselves. In Self Leadership and the One Minute Manager, listeners will learn that accepting personal responsibility for their own success leads to power, freedom, and autonomy.

Through a captivating business parable, Ken Blanchard and coauthors Susan Fowler and Laurence Hawkins show listeners how to apply the world-renowned Situational Leadership II method to their own development. The story centers on Steve, a young advertising executive who is about to lose his job. Through a series of talks with a One Minute Manager protégé named Cayla, Steve learns the three secrets of self leadership. His newfound skills not only empower Steve to keep his job but also show him how to ditch his victim mentality to continue growing, learning, and achieving.

For decades, millions of managers in Fortune 500 companies and small businesses around the world have followed Ken Blanchard's management methods to increase productivity, job satisfaction, and personal prosperity. Now, this newly revised edition of Self Leadership and the One Minute Manager empowers people at every level of the organization to achieve success.

Be an asset to your company, not a liability.

My impression: the One Minute Manager Revised Edition taught me how to tackle assumptions in the workplace. The two key words that were mentioned are: Competence & commitment. The author, through the use of fictional writing, expresses the need to evaluate your own levels of competence and commitment when dealing with a task of any kind. For example, after finishing the book, I asked myself these questions: Am I a self reliant achiever at this task? Or am I at a place where I must rely on others to assist me in a situation where there is uncertainty? A self leader realises their strength and weaknesses and is willing to ask for what they need in order to get the job done. The opposite of this is just quitting the job by assuming you just are not cut out for it. Did you ask for what your needs are? Do you need coaching, or support? Have you leveraged your relationships with supportive individuals who can give you the insights needed to solve what you thought was an impossible problem? These are some of the questions that the book has inspired me to ask myself.

This reminds me of the distinction between an infant child and a self leader. I wont compare a child to an adult, because unfortunately, there is clear evidence that a person who is mature in age can still display childish behavior when faced with a difficult task. So what is the difference between childish mentality and self leadership mentality? A child must wait for its needs to come to it voluntarily. The child does this by crying and complaining till it gets what it wants. The self leader, on the other hand, does not complain or cry when his/her needs are unmet, but rather, the self leader is proactive in seeking the insights needed to achieve a specific goal. For example, if you go to your superior and all youndo is cry and complain, then you are employing the tactics of a infant child; however, of you ask your superiors for insight, and clearly state what your needs are for particular project, then you are representing the behavior of a self leader.

Self leader = asset; Cry baby = liability

Be an asset, not a liability. Which one are you?

Great Illustration ...

This is va great illustration of how to personally execute situational leadership. If you're new to situational leadership this gives you examples and more insight into how the authors intended for it to be executed.

Not my style of literature, but great principles!

I like nonfiction and true stories. I get bored with fiction, but I listen to this in order to gain the valuable advice that offers, and it was worth it. Now if I can just figure out how to get the PDFs that were supposed to come with my purchase!
