Think of The War of Art as tough love...for yourself. Since 2002, The War of Art has inspired people around the world to defeat "resistance"; to recognize and knock down dream-blocking barriers and to silence the naysayers within us. Resistance kicks everyone's butt, and the desire to defeat it is equally as universal. The War of Art identifies the enemy that every one of us must face, outlines a battle plan to conquer this internal foe, then pinpoints just how to achieve the greatest success.

People who have read my books, particularly “The War of Art” and its cousins, have a vague idea of the odyssey of a particular solitary guy, wracked with guilt and riven by self-doubt, as he struggles toward his destiny as a writer. But they have only the scantiest conception of the particulars of that journey. These particulars I’m hoping may be of use to others as they wrestle with their own version of that same odyssey. So let me try to strip it down. Let me tell the parts I normally leave out.

Many famed music producers are known for a particular sound that has its day. Rick Rubin is known for something else: creating a space where artists of all different genres and traditions can home in on who they really are and what they really offer. He has made a practice of helping people transcend their self-imposed expectations in order to reconnect with a state of innocence from which the surprising becomes inevitable. Over the years, he has learned that being an artist isn’t about your specific output, it’s about your relationship to the world.

Hungarian by birth, Nicolas Darvas trained as an economist at the University of Budapest. Reluctant to remain in Hungary until either the Nazis or the Soviets took over, he fled at the age of 23 with a forged exit visa and 50 pounds sterling to stave off hunger in Istanbul, Turkey. During his off hours, he read some 200 books on the market and speculators, studying as much as eight hours a day. Darvas invested his money into some of stocks that had been hitting their 52-week high. He was surprised that the stocks continued to rise and subsequently sold them to make a large profit.

Creative work doesn't come with a guarantee. But there is a pattern to who succeeds and who doesn't. And engaging in the consistent practice of its pursuit is the best way forward. Based on the breakthrough Akimbo workshop pioneered by legendary author Seth Godin, The Practice will help you get unstuck and find the courage to make and share creative work. Godin insists that writer's block is a myth, that consistency is far more important than authenticity, and that experiencing the imposter syndrome is a sign that you're a well-adjusted human.

Gates of Fire puts you at the side of valiant Spartan warriors in 480 BC for the bloody, climactic battle at Thermopylae. There, a few hundred of Sparta’s finest sacrificed their lives to hold back the invading Persian millions. The time they bought enabled the Greeks to rally - saving, according to ancient historian Herodotus, “Western democracy and freedom from perishing in the cradle.” How did the Spartans accomplish this superhuman feat? This is what the King of Persia hopes to learn from the sole Spartan survivor.

Life isn’t about “finding” fulfillment and success - it’s about creating it. Why then has creativity been given a back seat in our culture? No longer. Creativity is a force inside every person that, when unleashed, transforms our lives and delivers vitality to everything we do. Establishing a creative practice is therefore our most valuable and urgent task - as important to our well-being as exercise or nutrition. The good news? Renowned artist, author, and CreativeLive founder, Chase Jarvis, reminds us that creativity isn't a skill - it's a habit available to everyone.

Every new project (or job, or hobby, or company) starts out exciting and fun. Then it gets harder and less fun, until it hits a low point: really hard, and not much fun at all. And then you find yourself asking if the goal is even worth the hassle. Maybe you're in a Dip: a temporary setback that you will overcome if you keep pushing. But maybe it's really a Cul-de-Sac, which will never get better, no matter how hard you try.

Description
The follow-up to his best-seller The War of Art, Turning Pro navigates the passage from the amateur life to a professional practice.
"You don't need to take a course or buy a product. All you have to do is change your mind." (Steven Pressfield, author)
Turning pro is free, but it's not easy. When we turn pro, we give up a life with which we may have become extremely comfortable. We give up a self we have come to identify with and to call our own.
Turning pro is free, but it demands sacrifice. The passage from amateur to professional is often achieved via an internal odyssey whose trials are survived only at great cost, emotionally, psychologically, and spiritually. We pass through a membrane when we turn pro. It's messy, and it's scary. We tread in blood when we turn pro.
What we get when we turn pro. What we get when we turn pro is we find our power. We find our will and our voice, and we find our self-respect. We become who we always were but had until then been afraid to embrace and live out.

Thought provoking
Turning Pro isn’t a revolutionary concept but Steven speaks in layman’s terms and weaves a narrative that makes you think about how you are living. I enjoyed the internal dialogue it created in me and the fact that it got me to evaluate my actions, habits and processes I currently employ. Very enjoyable outcome from a short time commitment.

Good for anyone struggling with procrastination
Provides a great framework for aspiring artists, authors and entrepreneurs to use in building a disciplined mindset and eliminating negative habits. The people giving it bad reviews sound like losers who haven't accomplished anything in life and hearing this just made them realize how much of their life they've actually wasted getting drunk and cosuming media. Morons should go read a "how to write for dummies" book or something. Because apparently being told they have to actually put in work offends them. Go have another drink with your loser friends and exchange excuses for why you can't get your life together and why it's not your fault.

Timely Wisdom
I have listened to all of Stevens books about living as an artist, writer, musician or entrepreneur; but not limited to those professions. I enjoy his been there, done that matter of factness that acknowledges we all behave the same way with different players. We cycle through these periods until we get to the point where we s**t or get off the pot. I’m at that crossroad currently and welcome his push off the fence.

Captivating and Inspiring
Our minds are powerful, but can only think within the confines of our own vocabulary. This book offers an abstract, yet compelling story on the universe we exist within- its rules, the forces which work against us, and our tendency to work against ourselves. It offers the language necessary to give back power to the artists, the creatives, and the passionate people who have a desire to pursue a life which may defy conventional norms: and this book does so in a way that feels more impactful, inspiring, and most importantly, possible. In the pursuit of any endeavour worth attaining, there are forces which work against you, whether your own, imposed barriers/beliefs- or society imposing limitations on you with the underlying desire to make you bury your purpose and conform to a life of unfulfilling mediocrity. This book is an opportunity to build a mindset to push past your self-perceived limits, and reimagine what your life can become. We can only go as far as we can dream, and this author most definitely made my dreams more vibrant and vivid. I absolutely loved it. And also have enjoyed other titles from this author. Cannot recommend this enough to anyone seeking a more personal and intimate approach to writing !!!
