Publisher's Summary

National Best Seller

Selected as one of NPR's Top 100 Science Fiction and Fantasy Books of All Time

The number one New York Times best-selling author's wildly successful first novel featuring his new Neverwhere tale, "How the Marquis Got His Coat Back".

Richard Mayhew is a young man with a good heart and an ordinary life, which is changed forever when he stops to help a girl he finds bleeding on a London sidewalk. His small act of kindness propels him into a world he never dreamed existed. There are people who fall through the cracks, and Richard has become one of them. And he must learn to survive in this city of shadows and darkness, monsters and saints, murderers and angels, if he is ever to return to the London that he knew.

"A fantastic story that is both the stuff of dreams and nightmares" (San Diego Union-Tribune), Neil Gaiman's first solo novel has become a touchstone of urban fantasy and a perennial favorite of readers and listeners everywhere.

What the critics say

"Gaiman's gift for mixing the absurd with the frightful gives this novel the feeling of a bedtime story with adult sophistication. Readers will find themselves as unable to escape this tale as the characters themselves." ( Library Journal)
"Delightful…inventively horrific."( USA Today)
"[Gaiman] is, simply put, a treasure house of story, and we are lucky to have him in any media." (Stephen King)

Absolutely perfect

It is difficult to pick a favourite Gaiman book, but I think Neverwhere is mine. Having the authors voice narrate the story opens it up to a whole new experience. I read the book while listening to the audiobook and it was seamless, Neil Gaiman's voice quickly and naturally fitting into my mind while I read.

The story, like much of Gaiman's fiction, is difficult to pin down to a specific genre. It is fantasy, fiction, funny, dark, meaningful and poignant all wrapped into one easy to read, light book. The characters are all so vivid, every individual person stays with you as a distinct friend who you think of after you finish the book, wondering how they are getting on. If you are curious about Neil Gaiman's work, I definitely recommend this as a starting point because it is a much less intense read than American Gods for example, but will also introduce you to his classic style.

Very entertaining and completely enthralling

This story, like Gaiman's others (Anansi Boys, Ocean at the end of the lane) is imaginative and sucks you right in. The narration is well paced and expertly edited.
I would use this story as an example of why audiobooks are good as reading the actual things.

Freaking awesome

Neil's performance was utterly enjoyable, as was the story. I love the Marquis, and I was so happy to get the new story of his coat included. Please, sir, may we have some more.

The Perfect Performance

This story is one of my personal favourites and I bought this to listen to on my commute, with my younger siblings, and just for when I was looking for comfort. Neil Gaiman's reading of the story is perfectly as I imagined it when I first read the book. His voice is comforting and familiar and the perfect match for the story. The pace is just right as well. Undoubtedly one of the best audiobooks I've purchased. #Audible1

An Odd Story, Wonderfully Told

Neil Gaiman's love of strange, unique stories shines in his storytelling and narration of Neverwhere. While those more familiar with the streets and places of London than I am will probably get more of a kick out of this story than I did, I still quite enjoyed it. Gaiman's narration definitely adds to the experience as you can tell that he performs it as it he meant it to be read. If you're interested in this book, I definitely recommend this version.
