Gets better

The first half of the book is a bit rough however it does get quite a bit better once the demons and other NPC type characters are fleshed out and you start seeing different perspectives. Overall satisfying but only if you put at least 7 hours into it

Edit: After listening to the second book I can say that it is similar in tone to the later parts of this book and has been worth putting in the time as a listener. Updated start rating to 4 after a reread.

Great series, extremely slow start to it.

By the end, I enjoyed the book. But the first 2/3rds or 3/4s of it was way too slow and felt a bit of a slog. Once I got over that hump though, I've absolutely devoured the following books and the setup in this book was overall solid.

Short of it, this book alone is not great, but the setup for the series is 100% worth it.

It Was Alright

Very standard, typical. Not a whole lot of new, but decent nonetheless. It certainly got a lot better nearer to the end, but it wasn't necessarily bad nor amazing at any point.

An interesting story that hints at much more to come

It’s a good story, very little of it is the main character talking at this point though I’m sure we will see the perspective shift. I love the hints at an endless multiverse immeasurable in size and population. I look forward to exploring it throughout the series. The voice acting suffers from something that drives me nuts, when all of the characters sound sullen or snotty or dumb. None of the characters get a voice that isn’t brittle or sullen sounding like a child even though they are older. It’s as if any voice but the narrators own narration voice ends up being cartoonish, nasally or like some classically portrayed 80’s TV sitcom nerd. I’m not throwing the narration out with the bath water, he has some good qualities including his narration voice and I hope the vocal performance settles down in upcoming books since I don’t think every single main character voice needs to be move up in register from the narration voice. But I trust the narrator and the narration is solid and clear, pleasant even. I find most narration undergoes an evolution through a series so I’ll hope for the same here.

Enjoyed it a lot

Since this book is the set up for the series it started a little slow as you got to understand the situation, the system and how it would affect earth and Zach.

Over all it was well paced, didn’t treat you like a complete idiot and didn’t get too deep into the mechanics, but deep enough you understand the power bands.

Would like to see a little more secondary character development, but honestly you can see it start to take shape at the end of the book, so I feel book 2 will get into it more.

For this style of book, if you like lit rpg/system style series, then it should appeal to you.

FOR ALL AUTHORS & WRITERS

In order to create an immersive story, you must incorporate 'Character Dialogue'!!! Who the heck wants to listen/read something that's constantly from the main characters eyes/opinion... In order to truly capture your audience & make the experience immersive, there must be multiple character dialogue. Further, quality voices emphasizing emotion only adds to the experience. That's my opinion & I suspect, many others agree. I'm continuing in hopes it gets better BUT, if I complete book 2 & it's been minimal, I'll be done the series. So I am truly giving it a chance. Fingers crossed 🤞

Stick with it, you won’t be disappointed

This whole book is action packed, but the first third was a bit much for me. Only one character, very little dialogue, just fighting and leveling up. That being said, the rest of the book is awesome. I’m glad I didn’t stop listening. This is a very well executed litrpg. It’s vibe is closest to “he who fights with monsters” or “codename freedom”.

long and satisfying

Zack grows in power at a steady stable rate no instant god mode or nothing he has to earn most of his power sure he starts off lucky but so do all litprg characters but the author strikes a good balance between luck and effort

Solid Litrpg

Solid post apocalyptic/dystopia event litrpg/gamelit story. No Harem. No agenda. Just an MC with a bit of an advantage dumped into an uncaring world with might and magic. The book primarily focuses on character growth and completing quests. Later it gets a bit of town simulation but still sticks to its roots which can be defined as, Axeman vs World.. Yes he's a bit op but it's a fun little ride. I'll be buying the next one fore sure.

Shoddy LitRPG

The MC has a level, rank/grade, class, rarity, attributes points, dao, cultivation, noble title and achievement titles to determine his arbitrary strength. There is even a town building system thrown in. The author has gathered every LitRPG system I can think of from this genre and blended them together with zero care or depth. I could go into detail about all the problems with the systems in this book but its just not worth untangling this mess. Eventually you will just lose interest because of how unreliable or unimportant most of the story is.

moronic mc

Once again the author makes the MCA moron so things can be explained also the author must think the readers are stupid as the author explains everything in excruciating detail Then add on top of that the MC is a Mega baby constantly complaining about everything think Stereotypical millennial

A Fantastic Start of a new Series!

JF Brink has crafted one of the best epic fantasy books that I've listened to in the past few years. There are many I've listened to that are extremely good, Cradle by Will Wight being very high on the list, as an example. However, At 23 and a half hours, this tome is on a level of Brandon Sanderson's The Way of Kings. Also, this being a litRPG genre, it is very hard to find a book that runs that length without a lot of exposition, repetitive filler sections and stat-bane poisoning. None of that exists here.

Furthermore, with almost 1200 titles under my belt, I have ended up finding that I have many authors on my "favorites" list and I find I am reluctant to take chances on new or unknown authors. I took a chance on this book because of the sample audio and what seemed like credible high reviews. I wasn't displeased and highly recommend it as being well worth the cost of a credit.

Pavi Proczko's performance was superb for this type of novel. His dispassionate approach to the narration is similar to Travis Baldree's, another fantastic narrator and as with Travis, I find myself picturing them reading books to their children or grandchildren, lighting a flame within to enjoy more books. It's a gift I am very envious of.

Lucky

I feel lucky that I found this book but the mc is even more so. Just try the book. I believe the mc's growth as a person will start soon. He is taking in humans and I'm sure will be trying to find family.

A Gem Worth Every Moment

I am glad I took a chance on this title. This was a fun romp with likeable/interesting main characters and lots of action.
I didn't have to suffer through page after page of the main character being stupid or women swooning all over him because he's the universes gift to woman kind.
If you are looking for lots axe swinging blood and gore with a storyline that keeps moving forward then place your token here. You won't be disappointed.

Good narrator very basic story/writing.

This book is good.
Narrator does a pretty good job but the pacing in the story is weird.
Books climax in the middle and the rest pretty much feels like a filer to get more word count or something.
The first part (Arc?) is really good tho, albait don't expect the MC to have any emotions but that may be a common thing for those LITRPG with OP mc ?
