What could possibly be “lucky” about addiction? Absolutely nothing, thought Laura McKowen when drinking brought her to her knees. As she puts it, she “kicked and screamed . . . wishing for something - anything - else” to be her issue. The people who got to drink normally, she thought, were so damn lucky. But in the midst of early sobriety, when no longer able to anesthetize her pain and anxiety, she realized that she was actually the lucky one. Lucky to feel her feelings, live honestly, really be with her daughter, change her legacy.

We live in a world obsessed with drinking. We drink at baby showers and work events, brunch and book club, graduations and funerals. Yet no one ever questions alcohol’s ubiquity—in fact, the only thing ever questioned is why someone doesn’t drink. It is a qualifier for belonging and if you don’t imbibe, you are considered an anomaly. As a society, we are obsessed with health and wellness, yet we uphold alcohol as some kind of magic elixir, though it is anything but.

Publisher's Summary
Alcohol Explained is the definitive, ground-breaking guide to alcohol and alcoholism. It explains how alcohol affects human beings on a chemical, physiological, and psychological level, from those first drinks right up to chronic alcoholism. Alcoholism and problem drinking seems illogical to those on the outside; indeed, it is equally perplexing for the alcoholic or problem drinker. This audiobook provides a logical, easy-to-follow explanation of the phenomenon and detailed instructions on how to beat it. Despite being entirely scientific and factual in nature, the audiobook is presented in an accessible and easily understandable format.
For more information and to read the first five chapters for free, please visit www.alcoholexplained.com.
"This is an excellent book written by an inquisitive and educated author who during a period of his life suffered from alcoholism. The book explains in an easily understood language the various effects that alcohol has on our body. In my opinion the text would serve as a great handbook not only for those struggling with alcohol but also medical students as part of their education. I am sure some of my own patients troubled with alcoholism in recent years could have benefited from reading William’s book and I will be recommending it going forward." - Håvard Molvik, MD, MRCS, MSc, MRCGP

A great tool and reference
I am a male in my early thirties that had made a habit of regular binge drinking alcohol for well over a decade. What once was an extremely fun and exciting past time in my youth became less and less so and this past New Years, after a forgettable heavy drinking night and horrendous hangover, I decided for the first time in my life to entertain the idea of quitting drinking.
After trying out a few other books on the subject I came across this one and found it to be the most to my liking. The author presents, in a matter-of-fact manner, alcohol's effects on various aspects of our physical and mental being. Although the point of the book is generally to show alcohol's negative impact it does not feel like he is nagging at you by bringing up countless personal stories but rather shining a light on some realities of what alcohol does to a person in the short and long term for different types of drinkers and how one can travel a path that leads to chronic alcoholism. The analogies were good and I found myself having more than a few moments where I said out loud "Ohhhhh!" in having answered a question about my previous behaviours.
I listened to this audio book on my nightly walks and have gone back to listen to chapters for reference. I am half a year free of alcohol and very pleased to be. This book was a big help and I highly recommend it.

The BEST recovery book ever!
This book is really life changing. I have read many recovery books, including the Big Book of AA. The author really does explain alcohol use to a tee. He is not preachy nor is he condesending. He just tells things how it is. I loved this audiobook so much, I ordered a hard copy from Amazon.
The book is layed out in easy to follow chapters that aren't that lengthy. I loved the narration of the book as well.
I highly recommend this book.

The common sense approach I needed
After drinking everyday for more than 10 years, I decided to stop and this book was a great help. If you're looking for an inspiring story - this is not it. This is a book about knowledge and common sense. Alcohol will make you depressed and tired, and in this state, the alcoholic brain will want to fix this with more alcohol. Even if this can seem basic for some, the author does a fantastic job of explaining why this is so important to not only know, but to fully understand. I'm now two weeks sober and life is pretty damn great. 🤘🧃

Shows alcohol for what it is
I can’t recommend this book enough. Alcohol had long ago lost its lustre for me, but I could not stop drinking everyday. This book gave me the framework to finally say Enough!
The descriptions of alcohol and what it is like to live without it really ring true.
Give it a listen with an open mind. There is nothing to lose and tons to gain.
I quit drinking 3.5 months ago and haven’t felt this happy in years.

The best explanation I’ve ever heard
Ah! Now I get it! This book is not a how-to manual! It simply analyzed the facts for what they are. There’s no blame, no guilt, and no rules… just explanations! If alcohol has ever had consequences in your life (for yourself, or anyone you know) no matter how small or big… then this book is definitely worth a read!!

Booze = Bad!
As someone who has chosen to stop drinking, I found this book helpful. I must admit it felt very "preaching to the choir" at times -- but that's what I was seeking. Some of the insights shared were clear and compelling. I'd go 5 stars, but the author's tone seemed a little too black and white for my tastes, in some instances. I will recommend this audiobook to anyone who is considering reducing their alcohol intake, and for folks who have already quit and are seeking a pep talk to keep them sober.
