Publisher's Summary

The best-selling novel featuring the "wonderfully epic hero" (People) who inspired the hit film Jack Reacher.

Thumbing across the scorched West Texas desert, loner Jack Reacher has nowhere to go and all the time in the world to get there. Cruising the same stretch of two-lane blacktop is pretty Carmen Greer. But for Reacher, the lift comes with a hitch. Carmen's got a story to tell, and it's a wild one. All about her husband, her family secrets, and a hometown that's pure Gothic. She's also got a plan. Jack Reacher's part of it. And before the sun sets, this ride could cost them both their lives.

What the critics say

"Smashingly suspenseful...The kind of daylight-noir setting that Jim Thompson loved. Child builds tension to unbearable extremes.” (Kirkus Reviews [starred review])

“An explosive nail-biting climax.” (Library Journal)

Breath Taking

My goodness what a book! I could not stop listening. I felt that everything was happening to me. Lee draws you in with each character and then he builds you up to a crescendo!! My heart races like I running the hundred meter in the Olympics. Totally worth my sleepless night listening. Loved it!!

Narration

The story line was a bit weak, narration drove me crazy, poorly done. The Alice character almost made me quit before the end

Poor Narration

The storyline is fine however it is very poorly narrated. The narrator's voice is dreary, unclear and just overall boring. His imitation of both females as well as other males is very lackluster. His voice does not at all conjure up the Jack Reacher character. Had I only needed to suffer through this one book, I may have endured it, however seeing that this narrator has gone on to narrate many of the other Jack Reacher books, I am going to have to abandon the series.

great book to listen to while driving.

some minor mis-pronunciations that were distracting but overall very good voice performance. at times during the book we missed a few turns, well written and unexpected ending.

Narrator sounds like he should be on oxygen

Really slow and no real story. Narrator is so old that he sounds like should be on oxygen and all you can hear is his dentures. Better on 1.25x speed.

Tedious

The narrator is decent but not great. The story line is disappointingly tedious for a Reacher book. I couldn't finish it and asked to exchange my credit.

Disappointing for Reacher

Slow paced, and just plain weird. Too “small potatoes” for the Reacher character, especially for a meek female lead he has no interest in. Is this a character building novel for Reacher?

The narrator is horrible

I loved listening to the previous Deacher books, but I’m 10 minutes in to this and I’m not sure I can listen to this old guy for 17 hours. Horrible horrible horrible
