Publisher's Summary

THE INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

Named a most-anticipated summer book by USA Today, People, E! News, Cosmopolitan, PureWow, CNN.com, New York Post, CrimeReads, POPSUGAR, and more

The bestselling author of Final Girls and Survive the Night is back with his “best plot twist yet.” (People, "Best Summer Books")

Be careful what you watch for . . .

Casey Fletcher, a recently widowed actress trying to escape a streak of bad press, has retreated to the peace and quiet of her family’s lake house in Vermont. Armed with a pair of binoculars and several bottles of bourbon, she passes the time watching Tom and Katherine Royce, the glamorous couple living in the house across the lake. They make for good viewing—a tech innovator, Tom is powerful; and a former model, Katherine is gorgeous.

One day on the lake, Casey saves Katherine from drowning, and the two strike up a budding friendship. But the more they get to know each other—and the longer Casey watches—it becomes clear that Katherine and Tom’s marriage isn’t as perfect as it appears. When Katherine suddenly vanishes, Casey immediately suspects Tom of foul play. What she doesn’t realize is that there’s more to the story than meets the eye—and that shocking secrets can lurk beneath the most placid of surfaces.

Packed with sharp characters, psychological suspense, and gasp-worthy plot twists, Riley Sager’s The House Across the Lake is the ultimate escapist story . . . no lake house required.

What the critics say

“Pure escape . . . A voyeuristic page-turner. After I read it, I dove for more Sager: luckily he has five others, bestsellers all.”The Boston Globe, “Ten Thrillers to Read on Your Summer Vacation”

“The tale takes a series of weird turns, morphing into a cross between Silence of the Lambs and The Exorcist. . . . As with Sager’s first five thrillers, the characters are well drawn and the prose is first rate."—Associated Press

“It's a familiar psychological thriller structure--until everything changes. . . . A page-turning climax.”—USA Today

Did not like the narrator.

Disliked the choice in narrator, but the book was good. Have yet to find one of his books that beats the last time I lied though.

Good story overall, but narrator ruins it

I wish I had looked at the reviews prior to ordering. I love Riley Sager so just went ahead and purchased.

I honestly cannot believe their choice for a narrator on the one! She sounds like an 80 year old woman, so much so to the point that I actually had to do some googling trying to figure out the age the main character was supposed to be as I was completely lost in confusion for the first while. I couldn’t understand why this elderly woman was taking about her mom making her move to the lake house haha. Good, interesting story line overall, but really bizarre choice for the reading.

Didn’t love the narrator’s voice

The narrator’s voice sounded like someone in their 60s+ and the protagonist is 35. It just didn’t match.

Enjoyable! Interesting turn of events

People that dislike the narrator - while I found she sounded much older than the character was, she was in no way a bad narrator. It was hard to imagine her as a 36 yr old, but otherwise she did a good job. The story was weird and interesting and took more of a paranormal turn than I expected. I enjoyed it.

Total mind f**k

My mind was blown in the best way possible. Still wondering how he managed to pull it all off.

Really enjoyed The House Across the Lake

Despite what some reviewers have said about the narration of this book…I respectfully disagree. I know the narrator’s voice is a bit “raspy” and “deep” but she does an excellent job! She brings the character of Casey to life (with all of her quirks) and her pace and cadence only adds to the whimsy of the character in my opinion. If you can get past the lower-range voice quality…you will surely enjoy the book. The story has a charming appeal even though it’s very much a psychological thriller. The plot intrigues and then surprises, with unexpected components and twists. Casey’s character is self-deprecating and self-aware despite her apparent flaws. This book was definitely fun to listen to… Would recommend!

Worst narrator

I pushed through the book. But wow the narrators voice was grating.
I liked when she did Catherine’s voice. But that was only a few moments. I would never listen to a book with this narrator. Never really thought about it before but moving forward I will review the narrator before purchasing an audible to ensure it is not Bernadette Dunne. Sorry

Hmm not so sure about this one

The narrators voice sounded so much older than the character. Made it hard to believe the story. Has taken me so long to finish this book just because I don’t find the story so compelling either.

Wrong narrator

I couldn't get past the first 15 minutes. Narrator was painful to listen to. Rating on story not accurate as I have not read or listened to book.

Bad narrator couldn’t finish

Narrator sounds like a machine reading a text. Raspy voice really annoying- apologies to the narrator if she is reading this. The storyline became obvious and I couldn’t continue listening to see if I was right or wrong. Maybe it reads better than it sounds…
