Publisher's Summary

"A gorgeous, aching love letter to stories, storytellers and the doors they lead us through...absolutely enchanting." (Christina Henry, best-selling author of Alice and Lost Boys)

Los Angeles Times best seller!

In the early 1900s, a young woman embarks on a fantastical journey of self-discovery after finding a mysterious book in this captivating and lyrical debut.

In a sprawling mansion filled with peculiar treasures, January Scaller is a curiosity herself. As the ward of the wealthy Mr. Locke, she feels little different from the artifacts that decorate the halls: carefully maintained, largely ignored, and utterly out of place.

Then she finds a strange book. A book that carries the scent of other worlds and tells a tale of secret doors, of love, adventure, and danger. Each page turn reveals impossible truths about the world, and January discovers a story increasingly entwined with her own.

Lush and richly imagined, a tale of impossible journeys, unforgettable love, and the enduring power of stories awaits in Alix E. Harrow's spellbinding debut—step inside and discover its magic.

When considering a new audiobook, one of the biggest questions listeners have is whether they’ll enjoy the narration style. This is understandable as audiobooks span at least a few hours, and sticking with one person’s voice for that period can feel like a big commitment. Luckily, there are so many excellent voice actors performing audiobooks that you might just find yourself gravitating to certain audiobooks based solely on the narrator’s strength.

Good Read

A bit predictable but an enjoyable read. The concepts are creative and the characters are not too conventional. There is a trend of human perseverance and familial connection that is quite touching and advocates the ideal of when even if all seems lost, you must keep going.
The actress does a good job in carrying both mood and emotion in narrative and dialogue.

Stunning!!

This book is an absolute masterpiece in my opinion. I will read it again. Probably start in just a few days. Harrow’s use of metaphor and turn of phrase are so achingly brilliant. January’s story will fill your heart with joy and leave you sobbing for what could have been at the very same time. A book like this doesn’t come around often. The audio is also excellent.

If only...

…the heroine wasn’t so terribly annoying, at times displaying the intellect, imagination and creativity of an earthworm.
The book has a great premise, shows great promise, has wonderfully lyrical language and a good story, but there were at least 3 times I almost ditched it, because the main character, January, just keeps making incredibly stupid decisions.
Personally I want characters to make the best possible decisions, but then something happens to thwart them anyways, so I can go “blast, that’s exactly what I would have done - dammit, that should’ve worked!” rather than mentally imploring the character to please NOT do the stupid thing they are about to do, just to have them do exactly that. It’s painful… *sigh*
It’s also regrettable, because the book could have been so much better.
I won’t include specific spoilers, just be warned to expect this and reduce your expectations and that way you can still enjoy the story.

Beautiful World Build.

Well crafted characters who grow with the story. I really like the concept for the world created here. Well performed and well written. It felt like a build up to book 2 which made the pace a little slow for my taste. Still there’s nothing really wrong with slow when it’s a beautiful journey.

Enchanting

A wandering, light-filled story. Beautifully written. Heartwarming, Strange, twisting, and read by such a talented narrator.
I finished and simply started it over again!

Dense & multi-layered story

This is probably the most complex book I’ve read in a long time. The threads of different stories eventually woven together after a long and very satisfying literary journey. I was sad when it ended.
