So often, addiction is viewed as a disease or an uncontrollable habit that signals a lack of willpower. In Internal Family Systems (IFS) Therapy for Addictions, IFS educator Cece Sykes, IFS author Martha Sweezy, and IFS founder, Richard Schwartz, suggest a paradigm shift. Rather than viewing addiction as a pathology, they propose that it reflects the behavior of polarized, protective parts struggling to manage underlying emotional pain.

Story
Traumatic experiences leave a “living legacy” of effects that often persist for years and decades after the events are over. Historically, it has always been assumed that retelling the story of what happened would resolve these effects. However, survivors report a different experience: Telling and re-telling the story of what happened to them often reactivates their trauma responses, overwhelming them rather than resolving the trauma.

Publisher's Summary
Now significantly revised with over 70 percent new material, this is the authoritative audio presentation of Internal Family Systems (IFS) therapy, which is taught and practiced around the world.
IFS reveals how the subpersonalities or "parts" of each individual's psyche relate to each other like members of a family, and how - just as in a family - polarization among parts can lead to emotional suffering. IFS originator Richard Schwartz and master clinician Martha Sweezy explain core concepts and provide practical guidelines for implementing IFS with clients who are struggling with trauma, anxiety, depression, eating disorders, addiction, and other behavioral problems. They also address strategies for treating families and couples. IFS therapy is listed in SAMHSA's National Registry of Evidence-Based Programs and Practices.
Internal Family Systems Therapy is deftly narrated by Brian Arens, an Audible listener favorite.

So powerful
A therapy that makes so much sense. Yes, our internal parts communicate all the time. I have experienced Incredible healing just by reading this book. A book that explores and gives straightforward solutions to healing systems at all levels - from indidvidual, to family , to community, and to countries.
I love the comparison to the Inside Out movie and is using this concept to teach students about their internal family.

Almost no bad parts ;)
The content of this text is mind bending and truly life changing. I am new to all of this IFS stuff and this book was tremendously helpful to broaden and deepen my understanding of the model. By the end, I was able to conceptually apply concepts to my own life and that of others. The only suggestion for improvement (eg my play on words - almost no bad parts) is that there are a lot of case vignettes, but with only one audio narrator, it got a bit confusing at times. Otherwise, the audio is excellent.
