Publisher's Summary

An Astra Militarum Audiobook

Cadia. This proud world stood defiant for centuries – a bulwark against the forces of Chaos residing in the Eye of Terror. All of this would change when it was targeted for destruction by Abaddon the Despoiler as part of his Thirteenth Black Crusade.

LISTEN TO IT BECAUSE

The Fall of Cadia is a touchstone moment of the Warhammer 40,000 timeline. This incredible battle led to the opening of the Great Rift and ushered in a grim new era in which even greater threats assailed the Imperium.

THE STORY

Cadia licks its wounds in the wake of the Thirteenth Black Crusade. The heretic forces retreat on all fronts. The day is won. But Lord Castellan Creed cannot rest easy. Something tells him the assault was a mere prelude to something greater, something more final. He is right. Out of the Eye of Terror comes Abaddon the Despoiler, at the head of a warhost unmatched in scale since the dread days of the Horus Heresy.

In the face of the looming apocalypse, Creed must weld the champions of Cadia into a bulwark capable of withstanding Abaddon’s fury. And in orbit, the Despoiler himself finds his own alliance teetering on a knife edge…

This is a tale told at epic scale, from the tables of high command to the slaughter of the pylon fields, and with a huge cast of characters from self-styled demigods to the rank-and-file foot soldiers of the Imperium.

This is the story of Abaddon’s greatest conquest. This is Cadia’s last stand.

Written by Robert Rath. Narrated by Mark Elstob. Running time 19 hrs and 44 mins approx.

This is Not a Foxhole

First and foremost I actually liked the narration. Is it a different interpretation of some beloved characters? Sure, but that doesn't mean it's bad. Every character was unique and easy to understand, not an easy task for how many of them the actor had to voice, and while they all were different to previous novels in the series they worked for how they were portrayed in this novel. The fact all Cadians had Northern accents helped keep them distinct from the other characters, giving a cohesion and charm to the people of the doomed world. They weren't nobility, they were backwater peasants brainwashed into a society the Imperium marked expendable. Abbadon's voice was great! A much more even interpretation of the Warlord, more controlled, more political, more Machiavellian. My one criticism of the actor is all of his “sargeant barks” sounded the same, a strained yell, but even that got the point across.

The novel itself is exceptional. A multi-perspective epic war chronicle that takes its time and respects the story it needs to tell. This certainly isn’t a book you’d recommend to someone new to Warhammer. Trazyn the Infinite, Belisarius Cawl, Ezekyle Abaddon, and Lord Castellan Creed all play significant roles and very little backstory is given, you just need to understand who they are and what they bring to the table. It’s really the characters Rath created for this book that are the standouts. He was able to give them full character arcs and it really added to the emotional impact of the finale. If you have a few dozen Black Library books under your belt and can forgive a different interpretation of some favourite characters then this book comes highly recommended.

Good story, questionable narration

The story is really nice, the different point of views, the events... good work.

The narrator though... I mean, he did voice like 70 characters, each with different recognizable voices, but some voices were... eh.
If you can weather through the first hour, you get used to it and he isn't a *bad* narrator, but they should have hired 1-2 more voice actors for a story this long and with that many characters, if only for the female voices and the more gruff voices that he seems unable to really do.
His Abaddon voice is quite nice though.

Greta story, terrible narration

Exciting story, well written. But the narration is terrible. Voices are awkward and weirdly pitched. This story is important and deserved a better treatment. Don’t waste your money.

the worst voice actor ever

I have listen to more then 200 book and this is the worst voice actor ever... every voice is gringe, force or a clicher. The book is just ok took very long to start. A sad take on a very important moment for the imperium. The emperor as fail us.

A strong addition the black library.

Distinct voices and lots of emotion in the naration, consistent accents for different characters. Space marine voices seemed a little high pitched to me coming from the Herasy Novels. Good story filled with lots of sweet moments that fleshed out characters I had heard of but didnt know much about.

A mediocre story, and poor voice acting.

The story is largely not very interesting. The action is just not very compelling, the characters are shallow, and while there are some fun vignettes, the most of it is forgettable.

But worse, the voice actor is very unpleasant to listen to. So many voices are a bizarre, nasal, very strained character. They almost come across as muppets or cartoonish parodies. It's very difficult on the ears.

Hate the Narration

I wish it was text to speech software recording instead of this, remember the Guilliman voice that was so bad they had to rerelease the Audible novels? yeah that one, well Abaddon has it now, enjoy!
