Is it possible to eat well, drink wine, and still lose weight? Melanie Avalon is living proof that it's not only possible, it's unbelievably simple and straightforward. It's all about the what (mostly paleo, but she's not a monster about it), the when (believe it or not, brief fasting can mean freedom rather than restriction), and the wine (red wine can be a secret bullet for weight loss - who knew?). It's a combination that Avalon discovered after years of self-experimentation and intense research on the mechanics of body fat regulation.

First, Ryan began a weight-loss effort, then Kim followed suit, eventually leading them both to intermittent fasting. Today, most doctors, dietitians, and even diabetes specialists consider type 2 diabetes to be a chronic and progressive disease - a life sentence with no possibility of parole. But the truth, as Dr. Fung reveals in this paradigm-shifting book, is that type 2 diabetes is reversible. Writing with clear, persuasive language, he explains why conventional treatments that rely on insulin or other blood-glucose-lowering drugs can actually exacerbate the problem, leading to significant weight gain and even heart disease.

Why do most diets fail? Why does one person eat a certain meal and gain weight, while another eating the same meal loses pounds? Why, despite all the advice about what to eat, are we all still getting fatter? The answers are much more surprising - and fascinating - than we've been led to believe. The key to health and weight loss lies not in the latest fad diet, nor even in the simple mantra of 'eat less, exercise more', but in the microbes already inside us.

However, there’s an ongoing solution that many are resorting to nowadays. Although it is not exempted from the opinions of cynics, it is a lot better than those options being offered in the market.

Best weight loss book I’ve ever read.
I’ve read and tried pretty much every weight loss and diet method or book ever. I’ve lost some weight on all of them and generally gained back what I lost and more. I’ve been gaining weight steadily year over year.
In April of 2019 I discovered Delay, Don’t Deny by Gin Stephens and it absolutely changed my life. I don’t diet anymore. I just follow the simple lifestyle of Intermittent Fasting and I’ve been able to lose almost 30 pounds. I’ve even kept it off during times of plateau.
I dropped at least 1 pant size.
Gin explains the science behind Intermittent Fasting so beautifully that it makes sense.
You will not regret buying this book. Follow Gin’s simple advice and IF will work for you too.

Excellent listen for *anyone interested in Health
I highly recommend, and enjoyed, this book. First off, if you are 'new' to IF or wondering about it, please, please do yourself a favor and just do it. This book, and several others, are God sends. I changed my entire life by starting IF. I did Atkins, Keto, allll the "diets" and every one failed me and were simply too difficult to maintain, long term. I will IF for the rest of my life, no questions asked. My husband, who had no weight to lose, also does it due to the enormous health benefits.
I believe that learning about this has changed our lives for the better, and it is not about dieting.
I have lost over 60 lbs and for the first time in my life, and in my 50's, feel truly in control of my weight and my health.
I am actually Angry that this information was not available to me earlier in life and I had struggled for YEARS due to all of the (government supported) misinformation about how to eat. It is Shameful how out-of-date health information is and that doctors are not required to know how food, and fasting, can change your body and health 100%. It's ridiculous. Pill pushers. :(
I am now *off my thyroid medication as well as my Type 2 D. metformin. All due to this new, very simple, very powerful, knowledge.
Now for the book itself. I quite enjoyed it and also got her other one. I like the conversational and down to earth tone of the book, it felt like a friend was talking to me and is not as technical as some of the others on the market (you should still get those, knowledge is power, and this is your Life we are talking about!).
I started small with fasts, only skipping a meal a day, and now I can fast up to 2 days with nearly no effort or discomfort, which I do every week. It's like a muscle, I got stronger at it with time and practice.
My weight is at its best and in my 50's I literally have a bikini ready body, while I had been over 200 lbs most of my life! While I was always on "diets", exercising so much without losing weight, not understanding WHY my body was broken. It wasn't!!
The system is broken. Only you can fix you, no pills, no diets, no doctors. I can't tell you how many times I broke down and how desperately I would have done anything to be thin and healthy, and the Whole time this simple answer was being kept from me.
Get the book. You have nothing to lose but baggage, weight, and your helplessness. It is SO worth it, and so are you. Good luck!

Fantastic
This was a wonderful read. Gin's information is simple to understand and implement and the tone of the book is light and enjoyable. I was worried at first that it wouldn't talk enough about the science, but it included just the right amount, with plenty of resources to go to if I want to find out more. (In truth, I've already read several of the other books she mentioned, but this brought all of the concepts together neatly.) The best news? I made one simple change after starting this book three days ago--switching to black coffee in the mornings--and I've already lost weight. So this works.

Thank You
When I was a young adult I ate mainly one meal a day. I never had a weight issue.and felt great. After having 4 children I gained weight probably 15 lbs. I joined weight watchers with some girlfriends and bought into the fat free and sugar free craze. initially losing the weight. I followed that way of cooking and eating for several year and my entire family put on weight. The more I dieted the larger I got. I have tried many of the popular diets since. The best I felt was on keto but didnt lose much weight. it amazes me that I rarely felt hungry, Sometimes the abundance of fat was a bit much on my stomach and I hate giving up carbs as well. My brain kept telling me all of this fat cannot be good. I am currently around 160 lbs am 5' 5' and 57 years old.
I often eat one meal a day and have been criticized for it on numerous occasions. it is relieving to hear that I am not alone in feeling my best when I am not eating 3 meals or snacking. I will have to cut out the flavoured soda water and occasional diet soda and cream in my coffee. i know I can do this. For me the big issue is wondering about what is the right plan for me, one that feels right and fits in with my family. my. husband wouldnt skip a medley unless he is sick. he eats out of habit and I believe because his body is conditioned to 3 meals a day.
I plan to join the FB group and hopefully it won't take me to many days to get into the groove of OMAD.

Skip and read Obesity Code by Dr Jung. Seriously.
You may notice that this author cites Dr Jung ad nausaum. However, Dr Jung NEVER cites this author and there's a reason for that.
This is simply HER own success story. Gin is a teacher, not a scientist, nutritionist, dietitian or physician and is monumentally unqualified to write about anything other than her own experience. SO, this is actually a memoir, not so much a guide.
The narration is unfortunate, but tolerable. But I truly think authors shouldn't narrate their own books. There are professionals for that.
Her Facebook groups and podcasts are riddled with horrible misinformation, dangerously so. The podcasts peddle MLMs, subscription boxes and woo. When challenged, Gin simply shuts down commenting, deletes other comments, or simply deletes the entire post. Each post is reviewed by her personally before it can even be asked. This lacks transparency and authenticity.
Fat does NOT "turn into muscle." Muscle does NOT WEIGH more than fat. Himalayan salt is just SALT. It isn't a cure all. It is NOT okay to binge on fast food, cupcakes, milkshakes, and coffee creamer during a window.
This book is a guide to a binge eating disorder.
Proceed with extreme caution.

Have a print copy, STILL bought Audible version!
Two doctors and a nutritionist recommended Intermittent Fasting for me. It sounded kooky and restrictive and impossible for a long while and then I Googled around and found Gin's podcast which led me to her books (Delay, Don't Deny and Feast without Fear). Gin's clear explanations made it seem a lot less kooky, a lot less restrictive, and a lot more manageable for someone who wants a normal life that involves sharing meals and social events with family and friends. DDD is a perfect introduction and also provides lots of background reading for those who want to dig deeper into the medical studies and science. I've shared her chapter describing insulin resistance a few times already to explain why I'm doing IF. Gin also has a delightful Georgia accent and genuine laugh that makes listening enjoyable. This is a great book to get started. If you want to keep it simple, you can just dive right in. If you want to learn more, she provides the annotated bibliography.

Sanity at last
The concepts described in this book are simple and sane. The author explains the benefits of intermittent fasting thoroughly and in easy to understand language. She also describes various ways to fast, how to get started, and helpful hints for the journey. Additional resources are provided for readers who want to read more of the science behind IF.
The author's personal story is very relatable and will sound familiar to many of us who have yo-yo dieted.
I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in IF.

This is the last 'diet' you will need to try
As a 'questioner' in the Gretchen Rubin "The Four Tendencies" framework I usually only listen to experts with credentials, or other credible sources like WireCutter or Consumer Reports -- People and organizations that are reliably credible. And while Gin isn't a doctor and doesn't have a degree in nutritional science and is not a registered dietitian, she has gained my respect because of her relentless review of research and the fact that she has personally tried about 25 diets. So with that caveat, I am about 8 weeks in with this intermittent fasting routine, and it has become a lifestyle for me. The research is abundant and incredibly persuasive - intermittent fasting improves health from the cellular level, and some of the side effects are healing 'leaky gut', improved cognition, less sensitivity in terms of what you can eat, more energy, and weight loss. Gin Stephens didn't invent intermittent fasting but she has perfected the strategy and the details of what 'clean' fasting is and it really does work. If you have been struggling with not being able to lose weight, you have a tire around your belly, you can't eat a lot of foods because they are inflammatory, you feel fatigued all the time, you feel like you are not thinking as clearly as you should... then this book is worth the read!

Changed my life!
I found this book on a recommendation from a friend. After 20+ years of yo-yo dieting and gaining and losing weight and feeling like a failure, this book has changed my life forever. I read the book in record time and began implementing IF immediately. The lifestyle was easy to implement, made so much sense, and I lost 20 pounds in the first 6 weeks. Was able to stay on the lifestyle while on vacation recently, and even lost 2 more pounds! I no longer have the defeating mentality that I've had for so long, I feel healthier, and I'm enjoying life. IF is so worth it, and this book allowed me to make this life change. I recommend it to anyone and everyone!

Awesome!!
I have actually read the hard copy of this book twice.. but I wanted to be able to have quick access while driving or away on trips. Best investment ever.. I love to hear Gin speak.. and I can hear her words of wisdom in my head!! This is a way of life.. it's not a diet you get on and then get off. I am so very thankful for this genuine lady and many others who are making a difference in the lives of so many.

Exceptional research plus Southern charm
If you are looking for "HOW" to do Intermittent fasting, this is the book for you. Gin has done so much research and it is all in one place. I read Dr. Fung’s Obesity Code first and loved how he explained how the human body works to lose weight. Gin put everything together into a step by step guide on how to do it so you are successful. It is pretty much like she is sitting at your kitchen table telling you all you need to know. Now, with the audio book version, literally……..she’s in your kitchen. Plus, she has an adorable Southern accent. I couldn’t recommend it more.

Hmmm.....weight loss doesn't equate to good health
This is the first book I find myself wanting to return. I've already read Dr. Fung's work and books (and all of the ones she mentions) so there was nothing new in here for me, however for someone else, they might like the very minute recap of some of his studies and the basic concept behind the one meal a day lifestyle. Otherwise, it's just a book that refers to studies for you to look up on your own, which he explains in his books.
I joined the Facebook group and I was just floored at what was being advocated for meals! The concept, I get and fully support. The lack of nutrient dense meals though, wow. I finished the book after joining the group and I can see the confusion. She is stern about "keeping your eyes on your own plate," which translates to "don't alert someone to the fact that a high sugar, fast food, refined garbage life style is detrimental because you would be judging and if they are losing weight, mind your own business."
In her book she says she is not giving up refined grains, processed foods, sugar, etc. But that's ok. She's losing weight. It's so incredibly irresponsible to promote that kind of lifestyle! Autophagy is not going to be the only thing that shields you from cancer.
I lost an incredible amount of weight on a strict keto diet a couple of years ago. But I was not healthy. I was taking more supplements that should be legally allowed and I still lost my hair, couldn't sleep, couldn't use the bathroom without an enema, and got fibromyalgia symptoms, just to name a few. All of this because I was losing weight in an unhealthy manner.
Just because you CAN lose weight on fast food for one meal a day doesn't mean it's good for you to make this a lifestyle. You can lose weight on chemo or on meth. Weight loss shouldn't be the plumb line for good health. This book had so much potential and the author has a lot of pull and could have very easily inspired many people to lose weight while making sure they were properly nourished. That catches up with you in the long run. Enjoy it now, if you follow this lackadaisical way of eating. You will look pretty hot, but your body, on a cellular level, will begin to reap the results that you can't see happening now. I still can't get over the idea of saying sugar and junk was something she wasn't going to give up and that she probably should eat more nutritious meals but wasn't going to. When you influence people in a book and on social media, you have a moral responsibility to offer them more than just a way to trim waistline. Weight loss does not equate to good health.
