Story
Vor Daj is a member of John Carters personal guard, and is one of the fiercest warriors on Barsoom. As the two fighting men search for Ras Thavas, the brilliant mad scientist, in order to save the life of Dejah Thoris, Princess of Mars, they find themselves captured in a city of grotesque, seemingly unkillable monsters. These abominations have human body parts, but in all the wrong places and the wrong sizes. This unique story in the John Carter of Mars series is the only one that is told from the point of view of Vor Daj, as he sees his adventure with the Warlord of Mars, John Carter.

I didn't think retiring to Mexico with my Russian girlfriend would last—turns out I was right. What we didn't expect was that we'd be embroiled in a secret war between Heaven and Hell. Yeah, demons and angels exist, and they're about as powerful and deadly as we've been led to believe. To even the odds a little, the agency has decked me out with an arsenal that takes the best from above and the best from below. And humanity aren't exactly slouches, either. We have occultists–humans capable of bending supernatural creatures to their will.

They connect to Outland - an alternate Earth with identical geology, but where humans never evolved. The group races to establish control of the portal before the government, the military, or evildoers can take it away. The ice is coming. It was the last thing we expected, but the world is freezing. A new ice age has dawned. Billions have fled the glaciers. A cataclysmic war is coming. In orbit, a group of scientists are running the Winter Experiments, a last-ditch attempt to understand why the planet is cooling. None of the climate models they build make sense. But then they discover an anomaly, an unexplained variation in solar radiation...and something else. Stunning concoction of everything I love in a great story
- By Deanna on 2019-03-05
We're not alone ... but who else is out there?
I am a huge A.G. Riddle fan, especially when paired with the magical voice of Edoardo Ballerini, and Winter World was no exception to my adoration. Edoardo does an incredible job of embodying the charming robotics doctor who finds himself imprisoned for reaching too far into the future, and teams up with Amanda Leigh Cobb for a dual narration experience that is truly out of this world. There are aliens, spaceships, robots, drones, and even a little bit of love packed into a nonstop adventure that you won't want to end (which is perfect, since there will be a second novel in this series). Riddle is adept at blending the mystery and adventure of a thriller with the intrigue and imagination of a classic sci-fi novel, and I just can't get enough. Dive into this winter space odyssey, and you'll be hooked by his captivating style of storytelling.

It’s been 120 years since the 50 or so worldships containing the few million survivors of the human species set off after the planet Earth was destroyed by a meteor. On the Worldship Humility, Sam, a 30-year-old Airlock Operative, is bored. Living in space should be exciting and full of adventure, except it isn’t, and he fills his time hacking 3-D movie posters and holographic adverts outside the stores in the retail zone. Petty thief Yasmine Emile Dufont is also from the WS Humility, but she is not bored....

Phenomenal character gallery
I absolutely loved this from start to finish. Colin Morgan's spot-on characterizations and the distinctive voices he gives to all the different characters of the story just hook you. His performance is brilliant. I am in awe quite frankly. I have never heard anyone perform a story quite like this. I quite fell in love with all the characters. Their fates move me. And I love this universe. Looking forward to more in the Code Series. Looking forward to Colin Morgan's brilliant voice acting to take us on those journeys too! In fact, I demand it!

Story
Jazz Bashara is a criminal. Well, sort of. Life on Artemis, the first and only city on the moon, is tough if you're not a rich tourist or an eccentric billionaire. So smuggling in the occasional harmless bit of contraband barely counts, right? Not when you've got debts to pay and your job as a porter barely covers the rent. Everything changes when Jazz sees the chance to commit the perfect crime, with a reward too lucrative to turn down.

Not so great
- By plaj on 2017-11-28
Rosario Dawson rocks this story!
The story is great, and the performance is brilliant. Rosario Dawson creates consistent, unique, believable voices for each character, and expresses the essence of this story beautifully. I love Andy Weir's storytelling, and he does have a tendency to make all the characters think the same way — logical and brilliant. Dawson brings variety to the characters that gives them more individual personalities. It's a great creative collaboration.

A total collapse of the patriarchy
"One of them says, 'Why did they do it?' And the other answers, 'Because they could.' That is the only answer there ever is."
The Power takes place in a near future in which women have developed the ability to shoot electrical currents from their fingertips. This power leads to a cultural shift — suddenly, men are being told not to walk home alone and the responsibility becomes theirs to keep safe in a hostile world. Ultimately, Naomi Alderman's latest novel is an examination of the corrupting influence of power, no matter who wields it. Women are not necessarily the hero(in)es here, and not all of the metaphors are subtle. But if I'm being honest, it's not not satisfying to listen to a book that chronicles the total collapse of the patriarchy.

We were fighting on the wrong side of a war we couldn't win. And that was the good news. The Ruhar hit us on Columbus Day. There we were, innocently drifting along the cosmos on our little blue marble, like the native Americans in 1492. Over the horizon come ships of a technologically advanced, aggressive culture, and BAM! There go the good old days, when humans only got killed by each other. So, Columbus Day. It fits. When the morning sky twinkled again, this time with Kristang starships jumping in to hammer the Ruhar, we thought we were saved.

Rather than being exterminated under a barrage of hell-burners, Earth joined their vast Empire. Swearing allegiance to our distant alien overlords wasn't the only requirement for survival. We also had to have something of value to trade, something that neighboring planets would pay their hard-earned credits to buy. As most of the local worlds were too civilized to have a proper army, the only valuable service Earth could provide came in the form of soldiers....

Neanderthals have developed a radically different civilization on a parallel Earth. A Neanderthal physicist, Ponter Boddit, accidentally passes from his universe into a Canadian underground research facility. Our universe is ruled by physics, and faster-than-light travel is not possible - until the discovery of The Flow, an extradimensional field we can access at certain points in space-time that transports us to other worlds, around other stars. Humanity flows away from Earth, into space, and in time forgets our home world and creates a new empire, the Interdependency, whose ethos requires that no one human outpost can survive without the others. It's a hedge against interstellar war - and a system of control for the rulers of the empire.

Story
In the stunning first novel in Marlon James' Dark Star trilogy, myth, fantasy, and history come together to explore what happens when a mercenary is hired to find a missing child. Tracker is known far and wide for his skills as a hunter: "He has a nose," people say. Engaged to track down a mysterious boy who disappeared three years earlier, Tracker breaks his own rule of always working alone when he finds himself part of a group that comes together to search for the boy.

Absolute originality
You may have heard Marlon James’ rich, ambitious fantasy epic referred to as an ''African Game of Thrones.'' While I’m a huge fan of George R. R. Martin’s now-classic saga, listening to the first book in James’ Dark Star Trilogy convinced me of its absolute originality.
Combining myth, mystery, fantasy, and African history into an almost undefinable genre listen, Black Leopard, Red Wolf follows the story of a superhuman tracker hired to find a missing boy. Blessed with a keen sense of smell, Tracker is lauded for his skills in locating the lost. But dark forces stand in the way of finding the child, and he starts to suspect the mission has a deeper, more sinister intention.

This was an enchanting novel so descriptive I many times felt like I was right there in the midst of the battles. While portrayed as fantasy the parallels to current affairs were evident and undeniable. As always Bahni Turpin's narration brought each character alive. Seventeen-year-old Alice and her mother have spent most of Alice’s life on the road, always a step ahead of the uncanny bad luck biting at their heels. But when Alice’s grandmother, the reclusive author of a cult-classic book of pitch-dark fairy tales, dies alone on her estate, the Hazel Wood, Alice learns how bad her luck can really get: Her mother is stolen away - by a figure who claims to come from the Hinterland, the cruel supernatural world where her grandmother's stories are set. Alice's only lead is the message her mother left behind: "Stay away from the Hazel Wood."

Captures the grim nature of fairy tales
Have you ever thought about how truly dark fairy tales can be? We're told the watered-down versions when we're young, but even those feature child-eating witches, bloodthirsty giants, murderous stepmothers, and more death traps as allegory.
In The Hazel Wood, 17-year-old Alice and her mother attempt to outrun the uncanny bad luck that follows them wherever they go. Soon, Alice discovers that the fairy-tale world described in her grandmother's cult-classic stories is real — and it's closing in. Melissa Albert's debut captures the grim, no-takebacks nature of fairy tales — how terrifying, how life-threatening, and how unyielding they can be on their path to parable.

Story
This is the way the world ends...for the last time. It starts with the great red rift across the heart of the world's sole continent, spewing ash that blots out the sun. It starts with death, with a murdered son and a missing daughter. It starts with betrayal, and long dormant wounds rising up to fester. This is the Stillness, a land long familiar with catastrophe, where the power of the Earth is wielded as a weapon. And where there is no mercy.

Heart-wrenching and fascinating
In N. K. Jemisin's The Fifth Season, the people of the Stillness are victims of a malevolent Earth in constant flux as tectonic plates shift restlessly, catastrophically. However, not all are powerless: orogenes, those with the ability to manipulate thermal and kinetic energy, can fend off the seismic events trying to shake humanity from the Earth’s surface.
The first in Jemisin's Broken Earth trilogy follows three orogene women at different stages in their lives as they forge bravely ahead in a world that treats their gifts with fear and scorn. With a particular knack for world-building, Jemisin skillfully examines complicated intersections between class and race, making for a heart-wrenching and fascinating tale that is ultimately about powerlessness in the face of institutional injustice.

Story
The Overstory unfolds in concentric rings of interlocking fable that range from antebellum New York to the late 20th-century Timber Wars of the Pacific Northwest and beyond. An air force loadmaster in the Vietnam War is shot out of the sky, then saved by falling into a banyan. An artist inherits 100 years of photographic portraits, all of the same doomed American chestnut. A hard-partying undergraduate in the late 1980s electrocutes herself, dies, and is sent back into life by creatures of air and light.

My name is Ruby Morningstar. I run a tattoo parlor in Portland with my best friend, have a pet raccoon, a crazy ex who stalks me, not to mention this one little thing...I'm a demon. Half-succubus, to be exact. For the last 23 years of my life, that's the story I believed, but on the day a handsome stranger bails me out of jail my world is turned upside down, and suddenly I don't know who I am anymore. Because the Four Horsemen aren't the bringers of the apocalypse. I am.

Ciara is the best damn wedding planner this side of anywhere, but she's no thief. That's exactly what the sexy-ass dragon shifter has accused her of - stealing his treasure. She's going to steal something of his all right, his sanity, if he doesn't let her go so she can get back to giving couples their happy-ever-afters. It's the best way to ignore the fact she's sure she'll never get her own. Not with any man, or even a dragon.

Zachary Quinto - best known for his role as the Nimoy-approved Spock in the recent Star Trek reboot and the menacing, power-stealing serial killer, Sylar, in Heroes - brings his well-earned sci-fi credentials and simmering intensity to this audio-exclusive novella from master storyteller John Scalzi. One day, not long from now, it becomes almost impossible to murder anyone - 999 times out of a thousand, anyone who is intentionally killed comes back. How? We don't know.

Story
Clare and Henry have known each other since Clare was six and Henry was 36. They were married when Clare was 23 and Henry was 31. Impossible but true, because Henry is one of the first people diagnosed with Chrono-Displacement Disorder: periodically his genetic clock resets and he finds himself misplaced in time, pulled to moments of emotional gravity from his life, past and future. His disappearances are spontaneous, his experiences unpredictable, alternately harrowing and amusing.

I was the chosen tool, her sharpened blade that would cut the deepest into the heart of the kingdom of Baist. But like all deadly weapons, my wedding is two-edged sword that could cost me my soul. For I am Rosalie, one of the adopted daughters of Lady Eville, and it is my duty to enter into a loveless and hate-filled marriage with the narcissistic Crown Prince of Baist.
